What's the difference? I know that an ISDN PRI uses a D channel, but how would I go about explaining this to a non telecom person???

try this
ISDN
Abbreviation of integrated services digital network, an international communications standard for sending voice, video, and data over digital telephone lines or normal telephone wires. ISDN supports data transfer rates of 64 Kbps (64,000 bits per second).

There are two types of ISDN:

Basic Rate Interface (BRI) -- consists of two 64-Kbps B-channels and one D-channel for transmitting control information.
Primary Rate Interface (PRI) -- consists of 23 B-channels and one D-channel (U.S.) or 30 B-channels and one D-channel (Europe).

DID/DIOD trunks also use in band signaling. ISDN trunks use the d channel for this. The B-channels are 64Kb in size. The individual trunks in a DID/DIOD group are also 64Kb. In the DID/DOID arrangement the top 8k is used for the signaling. Therefore the ISDN trunks will sound better by 8K. This signaling (D-Channel) will use the full 64x for all the b channels. The Data in the D channel is Caller ID info. Progress indicators as well as answer and disconnect data.

I hope this helps
