Dialup VPN. 1

Hi all,

We are using SBS 2003 in a typical setup 2 nics etc. I am having a problem with Dialup VPN. I have ran the connection manager wizard and installed it onto my computer at home. I can connect to the Server ok the problem is related to User Id or Password. I get error 734 and I then have to reneter user and pword. Even then it fails with invalid user id or pword. I am sure the user and pwords are correct. I use the Administrator id although I have created user id's specially for remote and they don't work either. Can anyone help as I am not sure where to look for the problem.

Have you made sure that the user has been given permission to dial-in? That would be in the general user properties for that user, on the Dial-In tab.

Yeah I have checked that and I had set it to allow access.

It is really strange as I have done this before loads of times and I can't see what is missing. I have checked it against other servers that I have configured and I can't see a difference anywhere.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Make sure your broadband router (from the client) allows GRE protocol (protocol 47). Check all the settings on the client broadband router for something like "enable VPN passthrough" or "Enable GRE" or something like that. That's a very common cause for this.

GRE is not a TCP/UDP port. It's an IP protocol, so you can't just create a standard port rule for it. Most devices have the option to turn it on or off, but they don't all describe it the same way.
