I am trying to connect two SCO systems for file transfering, automatically, I need to use dial-up lines, and telnet (which seems to work fine in cases where there is a network connection, does not seem to have the ability to initiate a dial up connection. Am I missing something, or do I have to use something other than telnet?

BBowen,

telnet relies on TCP/IP networking - simply connecting to another system using a modem does not provide TCP/IP networking facilities. You would need to use SLIP or PPP server and clients to use IP over a serial line.

Your other (probably simpler) option is to use one of the serial file transfer protocols such as Zmodem/Xmodem or Kermit, which were commonly used for transferring files to and from Bulletin Board Systems, etc.

You should be able to find sz and rz binaries for SCO to use Zmodem, for example.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Setting up a PPP connection between the two boxes sounds like the answer.

As I recall configuring PPP was pretty straight forward.
