a mate of mines has a pc and a laptop at home. he uses these to access a network in work.

the pc is W98 & uses a Hayes 56k modem,
the laptop is a toshiba and has a 56k internal modem.

when he connects to work with the pc he gets speeds of 19~20kbit/s and when he connects with the laptop he gets speeds of 30~33kbits/s

the obvious test would be to use the hayes modem on the laptop to see if thats the cause of the slow connection, that hasn't been tried yet [monday i think he's trying that] but i'm wondering if theres any other issues that might cause the difference in speeds.

thanks much someone once told me to shut up...

Modem driver version.
Modem chipset.
Modem manufacturer.
Modem type (PCI, ISA, Serial, USB, PCMCIA).
CPU speed.
Amount of RAM.
Operating system.
Loaded programs.
Free resources.

I could probably think of more... Cheers,
Jim

Sounds like a line-noise problem. Try listening to the line with a handset. Differences in speeds might be because of different throughput capability with the noise(?).

There's a decent modem troubleshooter at:

when it first happened i got onto the telephone company & they optimised the line for data & said that the speed would go up - but it didn't. so..

i ended up swapping out the hayes accura with a us robotics [just to test it] and the speed shot up to the same as the laptop, everyones happy now & we use the hayes as a doorstop

ps: thats a good site tho, i'll keep it in mind
thanx
