Dial Up Server

Hello,

I've been given the un-welcome job of upgrading our Dial Up system.

Curretly we have 3 pc's all running Win NT, each with 3 external modems connected.

I know that is pretty scary.

The problem is I'm unsure even where to start.

I've looked around and saw some 8 port modem cards to make a RAS server, but I'm wondering if there is a better way.

We have an all digital phone system, and I was wondering if there was a way to use that.

I do not like the thought of switching an analog call to digital => Analog => Digital

Is there any way to keep it digital?

Any advice would be very apperciated.

well there is a couple thoughts or things to consider, why, or what do you hope to accomplish, less busy signals, better connection speed ? is there a budget in mind ? on the connection from the digital phone system Most digital phone systems have analog ports for single line phones but that would depend on the size of the digital system aka if it is a PBX or a key system, generally speaking if you have a digital circuit to your LEC then you "should" get better connection speeds although that can vary with the equipment

You definitely want to keep the signal all digital if at all possible, otherwise 56K connections are out of the question. The second Analog to Digital (A/D) conversion makes 56K impossible, stepping down to at least 33.6K.

Cisco makes some solutions that will allow you to terminate a BRI or T-1 from your PBX into their devices and do modem emulation to give you dial-in access. Generally much cleaner than using analog lines into modems connected to a RAS server.

Try looking up "Access Server" on Cisco's site.

The main goal is to increase the connection speed. We are asking our field staff to do more and more with the dial up, and yet they can only connect at 33.6.

It is painful to use.....

I will check out cisco
