Dial Up Server as Extension

I need to hook up our file server to the phone system so that others can dial into it for work.

I thought that the best option would be to give the computer an extension. To access it you dial in to the voice mail system and enter it's extension.

Does anyone know of any other solutions to this? Would doing this tie up the voice mail system or the voice mail's direct dial number?

We're running Partner ACS w/Partner Messaging

why not set up a vpn and and let them access it over the net?

The extension used for the RAS and the line dialed in on will be busy while that user is logged in. Once the transfer is made from the vmail, the vmail port is freed up for the next call, usually a matter of less than 20 seconds total usage. The scenario you suggest is a valid one, used by tens of thousands of businesses across the US. Be sure that your system has enough lines to support the number of RAS users plus inbound calls plus outbound calls.

I would be concerned about throughput rate going through the partner ACS

when I do dial in like this up I use "the stick " by multilink line sharing device.
you run the target co line through the stick then when the remote site dials in you have them add a couple of commas for pause then a *3 and the call will then transfer to the third port on the line sharing device that we run to the modem on the server

the stick then makes a mechanical link and you get full throughput
I can think of one site where we have four lines set up this way going to four diffrent servers

a voice call is just passed through to the phone switch like normal

I still would do a vpn web access if at all practical

I would do VPN but our ISP won't open up any ports for us. I'm looking into switching now, but for the time being we have to use dial in.

you might try going thruogh the acs Ive never tried and maybe someone who has will comment

again my first concern is routing the data through the ACS
with the modem connection. Ealier today I was going through the partner 11 manual looking for some info on standard phone usage I noticed a suggestion there not to run data through the partner 11 maybe the acs allows for this.

the application I mentioned earlier is on a diffrent phone switch I had first tried going directly thruogh the switch and had throughput problems
I went to using the "stick" it has worked well in talking to the peaple at multilink they told me that it becomes a mechanical link once switched through the stick with no electronics involved . so it is the same as wiring direct to the telco with the advantage that the line can be used for regular voice calls as well. in fac I have used one line for voice , fax and data in more than one loctaion succsuflly.

Hi dplotts,
Use the "stick". Your highest data rate going through the switch is on the order of 24K.
