i keep getting this error when trying to dial up: "Error 777: Connection attempt failed because the modem or other connecting device on the remote computer is out of order"

so far, ive done the following:
1. uninstalled/reinstall the modem
2. uninstall/reinstall the dial up client
3. used a different # to dial up to in my dial up client

does anyone else have any other suggestions?

i went to this site before (guess i should've noted that info) and microsoft refers to having a HP Pavilion pc...which this is NOT. the site also says this is due to modem drivers not being compatible with Winxp, but we have many other pc's that have xp and have this modem, and they aren't experiencing these issues.

Can you try another modem, or try that modem on another machine to see if it is faulty?

When you say you have uninstalled and re-installed the modem was it only the drivers from the modem properties in Device Manager that you applied that to.

Have a look in Control Panel/ Phone and Modem Options/ Modems, and use the Remove tab to remove the modem from there. Reboot and let XP discover your new hardware.

i haven't tried another modem or that specific modem on another pc.

to uninstall, i removed it from the modem options in control paneland device mgr as well, rebooted, then let XP install it again

Have you tried using it in a different PCI slot?

The reason I ask is that we cloned a number of PC's for dial-up sites then got the same error on one of the PC's when a technician installed the modem in a different slot to the one we built the disk image from. We did the same steps as you but XP still wasn't able to resolve the hardware enumeration problem properly. Moving the modem to a different slot worked.

the modem i'm using is an external us robotics 56k v92. obviously i can't choose a different slot, but what about a different com port?

Not only that, but what happens when you hit the "query modem" option. Do you see responses to at commands? If not, modem not installed right or defective. If it does respond, then hyperterminal to 1-888-296-3892. This is an at&t v90 line, if you get a sign on, then the modem is 100% okay, and we're looking at a dial up networking issue. If it doesn't sign on, try 1-800-543-3279. Please run these tests, or you'll go around in circles.

By the way, the lines are 10 cents a minute, so don't stay connected too long.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
