Dial up networking connects but can't "see" connected computers

Hi,

Please can someone help me as i'm going mad.
2 machines, identical user account info on each. Both machines are connected together by dial up networking. Both machines 'connect' i.e user name / password gets authorised, yet when you search for either computer name on the opposite machine the search results in no computers being found!?! How can the two machines agree to connect yet display no information about either when connected?
Am i missing something blindingly obvious?

For the previous 24 months both machines have dialed up every week, connected fine and found each other when searched for. Now, without ANY settings being changed no information on either machine can be accessed.
