Dial up network configuration

I have two computers that I would to "network", i.e. cable together so that I can use both for the same dial up internet connection.
Both of these computers have dial up modems and use the same telephone line.
If I tie these computers together with a cable, should I disable the the non-host(client) computer's modem? I do not want to do this because at times I would like to use the client computer on the internet by itself.

You do not need to disable it, just set it so that it does not automaticly dial. See the "Connection" tab in Internet Options.
