Dial Up Connection transmitting

Using W98SE, 56k Plug&Play modem, IE5.0 dialing up to a local provider the connection is made but I get the message "This page can not be displayed". This is the 3rd modem I have tried. It makes the connections to local & long distance to ISP's but can not get a page. Help!!!
