Dial up and TCP/IP

This might be confusing, I hope I explain it clearly. We have a head office and remote locations. The remote location is a small workgroup (no server, not part of head office domain). Our head office and the remote location are part of a private network. In order to access public internet, one machine at remote location has dial up to internet (this is temporary, but necessary).

Here is the problem: when computer at remote location is NOT dialed out to internet, I can ping it's IP address from head office (over private network), and map drives to it. However, when it IS dialed out, I can no longer ping it or map drives from head office (over private network), but I can ping it from the other workstations in the workgroup. And I can always ping the other workstations from head office, regardless of whether that particular machine is dialed out.

So, what does the dial out do to block the IP traffic from the private network? The ISP assigns its own IP over the dial up, so it should be different than the internal IP. Is there a configuration change that will allow the dial-out at the same time as the private network access?

I hope I've explained it clearly, and I hope someone will have some insight for me.

OK, update to my own problem.

I read about the 'Use default gateway on remote network' setting, and turned that OFF on the dial-up connection. So even when they are dialed out, I can ping over the private network.

BUT, with that setting turned OFF, they cannot surf the internet over the dial-up connection.

And my search continues.
