anytime someone hits speaker phone you can hear the ear deafening dial tone across the building, but once the phone call connects its at normal volume, even the speaker crackles from distortion its so loud. Is there any way to set the volume of the local dial tone to a more sensable volume?

Sure, press the volume button before you are going to dial

wow I feel stupid, why didnt i think of that...

The thing is everyone in the company hits speaker, freaks out and volumes the phone down, then dials, and volumes back up. Its a headache to say the least when your in a call center. There must be a better way.

I fyou are using 4.0 or 4.1 thurn off secodary dial tone in ARS. Instruct them not to press speakerphone just dial the number on the keypad. Now you won't hear anything.

I am runing 3.2 because I have an older unit. That is a great solution though. Thanks ron.

If he could upgrade to 4.1 (which he can't because of old hardware) he could disable the speakerphone function altogether under the extensions tab. This is one of the new 4.1 features.
