diacritical overprints

I was away from dp for a few years. Now that I'm back I recall that there used to be a key command that would allow you to place a diacritical over a letter by simply not moving the line forward when it printed. I previously used this a lot for accent marks over e, etc. But now I can't remember and can't seem to find what the command was. Does anyone know?
 
...alt/option + e and then applying a keystroke to the letter "e" will give you an accent above the letter "e"...or "a"...for example...

...at least this is how it is done on a mac.
