DI - will not open on server, unless you retry 6 times (?)

We have Data Integrator installed on a server which we log into to make changes, etc. Upon first opening DI designer, it freezes (won't open anything)
After closing and reopening a few times (approx 6 or 7 times) it works like a charm.
WT?? Why on earth would this be the case?
