I have a NT 4 SP6a server that I'd like to get DHCP working on. After uninstalling and reinstalling the DHCP Server service, and the SP, I just can't get it to work. It won't give out any addresses. The service is started and the scope is created but it just won't give out any addresses. The server has no problem communicating with the network over IP. It has a static IP. There are no messages in the logs. Are there some registry entries I can blow away before I reinstall again? The clients are Windows 98 and have no problem getting DHCP from another server. If I set it up on another NT 4 server on the same network, it works fine. And no, I don't have both servers trying to give DHCP at the same time. I've rebooted servers and workstations before, after and between every step. I've tried removing and reinstalling IP on the server. The only other service this problem server is running is the NAV Corporate server 7.0.3. Otherwise, its fresh out of the box install with SP6a, latest NIC drivers, Option Pack (Upgrade Only option), etc. Maybe this one's fubar.

hmm...ok...

your range and scope aren't conflicting?? ie - subnets, ip ranges are cool with static network? all of this is on the same subnet? and same side of a router??

Everything is setup correctly. If I replace the problem server with another one, it works fine. Must be just a bad install....

hmm...tis odd to see only DHCP be the erroneous part of and install....are all 3 sections of the Event Viewer free of DHCP errors?? See if ANY address's are listed as BAD ADDRESS in the server.....one other idea that popped into my head....try uninstalling DHCP...and ALSO deleting the database.....that may be bad..and if it is...nothing will fix it.....install/reinstall...start/stop service....try that...and lets see where we get..

Yup...Tried all that before (and again)....Logs look fine. The only message I get in the system log is "The DHCP server is initialized and is ready". I think I remember having trouble with WINS on this box too. I think I'll just punt on this one. Its just a little irritating.

rebuild...the protocols seem screwy...or you could try a different nic??

Maybee the DHCP database is corrupt. Stop the service, nuke the database and restart the service. Who knows?

Done that several times. I've even blown out all of the registry stuff and the directories and reinstalled.

This may sound silly but it worked for me on a very similar problem.

1 Boot up server connected to Network and shut down properly

2 Remove network cable and boot up Server shut it down again

3 Put cable back in boot Hooray it all works again!!!!

I think it has something to do with Mac address on the NIC's!
Let me know how you get on!

Have you activated the scope ?, it doesnt get activated by default.
