Interesting situation. Have various users (95, 98, 2K). 1/2 of my staff started dropping of the network the other morning. Each person being dropped received a brief DHCP message, and their connections were terminated. Running winipcfg showed there was nothing assigned, nor could I renew/release from these 'dropped' users.

The other 1/2 of my office was fine. All users are: connected to the same 10/100 switch, all log into the same Netware 5.1 sbe box (no special IP address exclusions or pools on the DHCP server) cold/warm reboots didn't do a thing.

Through the admin tool, I checked the DHCP/DNS server tool. It "appeared" to be up & running fine. No errors at the console. I downed the DHCP server brought it back up. Mysteriously, after 'bout 15 minutes people were starting to get IP addresses again.

Has anyone every seen something like this before? Thanks in advance ~

We have a similar problem....we are going to try static IP addresses to hopefully fix this. I'll let you know if it works.

I've been chasing this one for months. The lastest "solution" came after we noticed that it was predominatly win95 pc's. the Fix- exit to DOS (not a DOS WIndows) cd directory to c:\windows\ws2bakup and run ws2bakup.bat. It kicks The bejeuses out of IP problems until next time.

We have a problem where our staff computers (mostly laptops running Win98SE) are not effected; however, our labs' (MacIntosh & Dell PC running Win98) workstations lose connection with the server. This problem did not effect our school until recently. At spring break we modified the registry on 1/2 of the PC lab computers, and also had the service packs upgraded.

Any idea what would cause us to lose connection to our server would be well appreciated.

The C:\WINDOWS\WS2BAKUP\WS2BAKUP.BAT item rings a bell - it gets created during some install / upgrade of MS products, perhaps IE, and running the batch file cures the problem, but I find I have to run it twice - once from inside Windows, and again after exiting to MS-DOS. Then whatever IP problems I have had go away.

The ws2bakup is created when you some software installs upgraded winsock stuff. I have had to use this so many times I carry a copy on cd as some machines still wont work after it is ran.
U need to run it in windows as there is a register edit, you then need to run in dos mode as some of the files are in use if windows is loaded. Lee Smith
