I have an IP Office system going in with (91) 9608 phones in a few weeks. All of the installs I have done with IP phones have been static. I have never had any luck with DHCP and always ran into problems. I know it's because I am not doing something correctly. I hear it is very simple to set up, but I'm not really sure on how to go about it without having issues. Can anyone help me out with this process or explain to me on how to do it properly? They currently are running on DHCP and have a server there now. I will also be installing Voice Mail Pro on that server as well.

Thanks.

ALARM BELLS ^^^^^ This is rarely a very good idea, other services and software will interfere with VM Pro especially when the server is also running DHCP, you are better off with a standalone server or even cheap pc than using an existing server :)

Ok, nice to know. Should I stick with static IPs then? Should the VMPro be on a different machine as well or do you think it will be ok?

It's VM Pro I am talking about, using their DHCP is fine.... but using/loading VM Pro on a customers existing server is a bad idea especially when that server runs DHCP/DNS etc as it can seize the ports VM Pro uses and it stops VM working :)

I didn't know that, good to know! So as long as VMPro is on a different machine and doesn't have DHCP or DNS it's ok.

Now as far as DHCP setup goes - If I install VMPro on a different machine, what's the procedure on the DHCP setup instead of static?

All of the VMPro installs I have done have been on standalone PCs or C110 Modules. This is the first one I will be doing that they requested everything all on he same unit. I will let them know it's not a good idea...

For DHCP setup read this
and never ever install real time software on DHCP/DNS server or a DOMAIN controller, the have their own tasks and must be left alone no matter what the customer or their IT guru's say. If it is only for VM Pro with a low load you could install Windows Virtual PC on the server, that works well but the server must have enough resources and computing power.

Know your product and become a Pro

if you go down the Virtual PC route then it is probably better to install the CentOS based application server (no additional VM License req.) heck I perefer the apps server on a stand alone PC as well it stops the IT bod from playing around & breaking things.

as to the IP handsets these are best installed on a separate Vlan.
if you connect the Wan port of your IPO to a tagged port on the data switch you should be able to user the IPO to provide DHCP for the IP Handsets. Again this is usually easier than getting the IT bod to configure their DHCP server correctly.
