Two questions regarding Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 eDesktop:

1. Can the DHCP server allocate IP addresses for Windows boxes, and...

2. If so, can anyone either explain how to set it up, or point me towards a good FAQ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Yes - absolutely. In fact you can set more settings with dhcpd than the M$ dhcp server.

Set-up is pretty simple really - just edit your /etc/dhcpd.conf file. The following is an example

subnet 172.16.16.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {

range 172.16.16.10 172.16.16.50;

option routers 172.16.16.5;

option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;

option broadcast-address 172.16.16.255;

option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1;

option netbios-name-servers 192.168.1.1;

default-lease-time 21600;

max-lease-time 43200;

}

Sorry about the formatting ! Hopefully, its self explantory - the 'netbios-name-servers' is for wins server info.

See -->

You'd obviously have to set it up so that the dhcpd server runs automatically under sysv init - this would be be the same way as for other such services. Presumably, caldera would have an init script in their dhcp rpm .

Hope this helps
