Hello,

I have 4 win 98 PCs and 4 XP PCs on a peer to peer network with a router and 3 autoswitches. One win98 PC I just try to hook up does not want to connect. It gives a green light on the switch and on the NIC. When I put ipconfig in it shows me the PPP adapter, but when I want to renew it gives this error:
DHCP Server unavailable Renewing adapter ""
So I removed all network components and installed everything again, it still has the same problem.
I have another PC (XP) on the same switch and this works fine.

Can anyone help.

Thanks
Octavee

I guess the router is configuered as a DHCP.
The ISP has the MAC ID of the router to hook it up to the High Speed Internet.

You should check - you may have statically assigned IPs on the other machines, or they could be using APIPA (the IPs would be 169.254.x.x).

The MAC ID is irrelevant to it running DHCP or not.

The router's configuration panel may help.

On all other PCs I have the same settings on automatic IP addresses and they work fine.

I have all PCs set up with optain the IP automatically. ANd 'Use DHCP for WINS Resolution'.

My laptop with XP has the IP 192.168.0.105 and is connected to the same switch as the win98 PC that has trouble.

The NIC (according to Device MAnager) is working properly and has a green light. Also a green light at the autoswitch.
But no ping to a website.
Ping 127.0.0.1 gives a result.

On winipcfg I get 0.0.0.0 for IP Address under PPP Adapter with DHCP Server 2555.255.255.255
When I change to the realtek instead of PPP I get a 169.254.215.128 but I can not renew.
Usually I use the PPP and it automatically assigns the IP, but how do I figure out if the NIC is busted or if I have another problem here.
