Hi

I was asked to help out with a computer literacy project here in rural south africa.

They have a MS server 2003 with a bunch of clients, the server is not connected to the internet and is just used as a file/print server. A telkom tech came to install a broadband modem, and after this visit no clients could connect to the server any more. Ive been battling with this for weeks now, reinstalled dns, reinstalled dhcp, but its just not coming right. Im completely out of options here. Please help!

The event viewer shows the following errors:

eventID: 2504
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NwlnkIpx.

Eventid: 12
Time Provider NtpClient: This machine is configured to use the domain hierarchy to determine its time source, but it is the PDC emulator for the domain at the root of the forest, so there is no machine above it in the domain hierarchy to use as a time source. It is recommended that you either configure a reliable time service in the root domain, or manually configure the PDC to synchronize with an external time source. Otherwise, this machine will function as the authoritative time source in the domain hierarchy. If an external time source is not configured or used for this computer, you may choose to disable the NtpClient.

Eventid: 20169
Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address 169.254.181.143 will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to access resources on the network.

A couple of questions

- Why do you still have IPX bound to your network adapter? Are you connecting to a Netware server anywhere?
- What is the purpose of the broadband router in relation to the server. Were you going to use it to share internet access via RRAS?
- Was the server's connectivity/IP settings modified in any way during the router install?

From a quick check

1. If this server is a domain controller, have you checked to see if the DHCP service has been 'authorized' by AD.

2. If you don't have an external time source on your network, your DC won't be getting it's time from anywhere except itself. So the time errors you're receiving are to be expected

It also occurred to me that your broadband router has a DHCP server enabled which maybe conflicting with your server (and hence it is no longer authorized) and not working. If you disable the broadband router's DHCP server you will affect other users ability to access the internet. As I don't know how the broadband router fits into your network, I am assuming they are on the same physical subnet.

One thought I had....

What IP addresses are the client systems showing?

169.254.x.x addresses mean they can't contact the dhcp server
Anything else and they're getting an address from somewhere.
ipconfig /all will show the source dhcp server

There's an outside chance the router has dhcp enabled (which I've seen on occasion cause problems for the windows o/s)

Check the router and see what's being done there. As a secondary method if you can't get dhcp working on the server use the router to allocate IP information - as long as you can specify dns to the internal server)

Also if it's not being used, check that routing and remote access is disabled.
