DHCP On Second Server

Our small network has 2 W2K servers. Server A is the original server and is a DC running AD, DNS, WINS, and DHCP. The 2nd server (Server B) was basically just a file server. I decided to promote Server B to a DC and install DNS. The zones on both servers are AD Integrated.

My main question is, I also installed DHCP on Server B (hoping that if Server A goes down I can still dole out IP addresses), and I named the scope on Server B the same as on Server A and the scope range is the same. Do you think this will cause any proplems or should the scopes on each server have a different name and a different range of IP addresses.

Rayway,

You cannot have two DHCP servers handing out addresses from the same scope as this will cause IP address conflicts on your network. Since each DHCP server only keeps track of the IP addresses it hands out and not what other DHCP servers are handing out.

Configure each server with a subset of the scope you want to use. If for example you are using internal addressing in the range 192.168.1.x/24 you can configure DHCP server 1 with the scope 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.127 and DHCP server 2 with the scope 192.168.1.128 thru 192.168.1.254.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the help. That answers my question. Since I have made the post I have seen an address conflict error.

Can my Win2K Server DHCP also assign Gateways and DNS to my WInXP Pro clients?

How do I do this?

In DHCP goto your scope then goto scope settings, right click on scope options and goto configure options you can enter DNS and GATEWAY IP's under the right options.

I don't see "gateway" in the options. Could this be the same as "Router"?
