I'm running XP Home with a cable modem (no additional router or firewall). Suddenly lost IP capability and get the following message when running:

ipconfig /renew

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 3 : Access is denied.

DHCP Client is running using Automatic.

I've tried to ipv6 install, reboot, and ran netsh int ip reset, and reboot. Same error.

I've deinstalled all network adapter drivers and reinstalled.

The NIC card seems to be functioning as far as I can tell.

I don't have a static IP to test with.

Any ideas? There doesn't seem to be any listings in the Microsoft KB for this issue.

Thanks

Have you tried repairing the Network Connection. (In the network connection folder, right click and select repair).

If that doesn't work I would ask your ISP. (Some ISPs will deny a DHCP request, unless the lease has expired)

Ash.

When I tried to repair the Network Connection I got the following error dialog:

The following steps of the repair operation failed:

- Renewing the IP address
- Flushing the ARP cache

Please contact your network administrator or ISP.

I did speak with my ISP earlier and they said that my Cable Modem looked fine from their end and that they could "see" all the way to my NIC. They believed that it is a Windows XP configuration issue, and I think I agree.

If you go into DOS and type arp -a what results do you get? If any type arp -d *

Have you checked your Physical MAC Address in IPCONFIG with the details the ISP have? Generally the ISP lock your connection to your MAC address, if they have different details they will deny you access.

Ash.

arp -a returns no entries.

The ISP does have the correct MAC address (we checked that on the phone).

I'm on another computer using the same cable modem, etc. typeing these posts so I know that that part is working properly.

So are the machines on the cable modem normally networked? Router or Hub? What is the topology with the cable modem?
This may be a routing issue. TinWeasle

There's no networking going on. I'm just pulling the ethernet cable and rebooting the modem to switch back and forth (this is just to access the web since I cannot from my normal computer)

I am having the same problem and have also tried everything that has been recommended to you with no luck.
The one thing I tried that you have not is giving the machine a static IP, but even with a static IP if I check the LAN connection or do an ipconfig it comes back all 0's.
Maybe this might help point someone in the right direction.
