I have a Windows XP Professional machine connected to a hub and then a router for my DSL. I have a PCI NIC in currently and everything works fine. I need to switch to a USB NIC to free up a PCI slot. When I try to use the USB NIC I cant see the network. IPCONFIG/RELEASE and IPCONFIG/RENEW don't help. RENEW fails saying it is unable to connect to the DHCP server. RELEASE and RENEW works fine for the PCI card. The link light is lit for the USB NIC and the loopback ping to 127.0.0.0 works fine. I get an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and can't ping any other address. Any advice????

DHCP is enabled. I have also tried using a static IP address. I can then ping the loopback address and the static IP address of my own machine but cannot ping the gateway or any farther.

OK....

You say that everything is fine using the pci nic.

DHCP is enabled.........

Have you loaded the USB drivers?

Thanks for the input.

USB Drivers are loaded. What does registering the MAC address consist of?

1. finding out the MAC address of the (USB) Network adapter
2. Logging into your router - granting access rights for that MAC. (check your router's user manual for this)

This only applies if you have set the router up to only allow preconfigured MAC addresses.

I know your frustration. I have a wireless USB adapter that gets the same 0.0.0.0 with Win 2000 pro. It only works if you re-install it everytime you boot. The same adapter works flawless on Win 98 & XP. I hope you find a solution.
