Hi

Hope some one can help. Network newbie so please explain any jargon. Thanks ;-)

I am trying to link 3 laptops to the office network. they are WinXP Pro and the server is SBS 2000.

If I set the laptops to AutoFind IP and DNS with DHCP on, the network is not found... IPCONFIG /RENEW returns a time out on the DHCP server.

If I turn off the Autofind and manually set IP addresses then the computers can access the network fine. Problem is the computers belong to more than 1 network so need to be reconfigured manaully everytime they swap locations.

What am I doing wrong? I need these up and running asap

Thanks in advance for the help

Has the DHCP scope been setup and the DHCP service started on the SBS 2000?

as far as i can tell. Yes. in the admin consonle for dhcp there is a scope (although not too sure what this is) and it says that the service is running.

think i cracked it. been playing around with the scope properties and realised it had only got a range of 10 IP's...bumped this up and was able to connect the laptops ok.

only question now though is that we used to have 50+ pcs linked to the network before i started so not too sure whats going on.....this is one hell of a learning curve thanks for pointing me in the right direction. hadn't even heard of scopes b4 today
