Hi

I am a VPN newbie so please excuse if this is a obvious question.

I have two offices with one PC at each and a network hard drive at one of them. I would like to link the sites to allow both PC's to access the network hard drive.

I have picked up 2 x Netgear DG 834's and looked at the vpn wizard which seems straight forward.

I have created dynamic dns accounts for each router.

My next step is to replicate the vpn details in each router to hopefully allow them to link up.

I have 2 questions

1. If the link is established, does it appear to the user that they are simply linked as if they where on a LAN

2. I am using the same IP range at both sites. So router at site a is 192.168.1.1 can router at site B also be 192.168.1.1 or does it need to be unique as in a LAN? ie 192.168.1.2

Many thanks

when you set this up... you must change your ip scheme.

The way i have my VPN setup is this...

Main Site
- - - - - - -
10.25.18.0 + 10.25.18.255
Router 10.25.18.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

Remote Site
- - - - - - -
10.25.19.0 + 10.25.19.255
Router 10.25.19.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

You can have the same subnet and it will work and all your clients will be able to see each other, but you will have to change your ip scheme. I did mine like that so that it was much easier to work with, and i havent really had any headaches.

where i have router it would also be called Gateway or if it says remote subnet you could use your IP address but place a 0 in the last spot (e.g. 10.25.18.0)

You can use your local ip of your router but it will work with a 0 in place as it will know while its connecting.
