We are looking at modifying the setup of remote offices. I would like to deploy VM's to allow us to have a single server and possibly use the improved DFS of R2 to replicate files to the corporate office instead of using tape backup in the remote office. Two questions:

In order to see the improvements in DFS of R2 do you have to have R2 installed on all DFS servers or just a few, what are the requirements with this?

Does anyone know a good solution to fix the pst problem with backup up through DFS? If users have network based pst files open instead of having them locally on the client it will create problems. One possibility is making sure all users have them on the local C: drive and using pstbackup to backup pst files to the network every few days. Is this the only solution or is there something better?

I am currently doing this and have found out that R2 must be used by both the servers for the replication to occur.
Previous releases of 2003 Server will not replicate. I have two 2003 Server Std SP1 and must upgrade to R2 in order to accomplish this.
Here is a link to a tutorial I found online that will help.
