Hi i have a domain call test.com and would like to set up a dfs

the dfs root is called \\test.com\data

inside the data share i would liks to have 2 foldes one called users and the other called group

I have 200 and would like to put 100 users on one server and a 100 on another

so inside the users foled I would have links to the shares on each server theshasre names would be user1$ user2$ etc so they are hidden

if a user was to access there share what would the unc path be

\\test.com\data\user1$
\\test.com\user1$
\\test.com\users\user1$

thanks

ok this 100 on one server and 100 on another thing wont happen unless you use standalone DFS, or unless you have two different sites with 100 users in each. the site lookup mechanisms will always hook into any available (again, unless standalone root is used).

what is your actual question though?

I agree. DFS isn't really load balancing. It's the ability to have local copies of data shares in multiple locations, with users accessing the closest copy.

Unless your users are in different AD sites, I don't think your idea will work.

ok we will use a standolone root. The reson for using dfs is that we are running out of disk space and we want to spread users share evenly over 2 servers and only want to change the users log on scripts ones and to be able to add more storage when this happens again with out changing users log on scripts

the question is is we had a root called \\server\data and in theat we had a folder called users and in that folder we had the links to the users shares which are hidden what would the unc path to the share be. Do you have to type the full path or can you just use the root and then the share name to conect to it

\\server\data\usershare$
or
\\server\data\users\usershare

thanks
