When a large number of files are deleted it did not reflect in the output for df -k.

A system reboot helped this out.

Is there any other way to find out what is going on and the preventive measures that can be taken to avoid this.

Thanks.

Hi,
this usually happens when there is a process running which has the deleted file in use.
You may find such a process by means of fuser, before deleting.
hope this helps

I've found that sometimes df does not report right, it's output display a false filesystem occupation. Try a quotacheck over the filesystem and then the df command, sometimes it is fixed this way. You can use quotacheck <mount point> or quotacheck filedomain#fileset , it does not need to be umounted.
