Dexterity Serial Access - Scanner/Reader

Is there a way to access a serial port (usb smart card reader or the like) to read identification cards?

I would like to implement card readers that work for logging into Windows, as well as authorizing certain activities within GP. I've already tied into some of the security procedures so I have implemented keyboard or HID based card readers, but what about readers that only work as a comm port? Can I access those from within a custom GP module?
