A friends winx VMM32.VXD file is corrupted and my system will not even come up in safe mode.

As I understand it the VMM32 file is built during system install and can not be copied from the .cab or another windows machine.

So before formatting and reinstalling I was hoping to be able to backup my files. Are there any dos drivers for CD-Rom devices or ZIP drives?

Any other suggestions on how to back-up the data files or somehow preserve them?

thanks

ZIP uses the DOS program "guest". It identifies the ZIP and assigns a drive letter to it.
Ghost supposedly will backup the files to a CD burner, but I have been unsuccessful and I hear war stories about others having problems also. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

You could install the drive with the sick OS as a slave on another computer and copy the files you want to back up to that system. then after you do your format and reinstall retrieve them the same way, or network the 2 computers or use CDR if the other system has a burner All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Hi,
I have used GHOST and it works fine, I have used DRIVE IMAGE and it works fine - However, geting to the point of using them proficiently can be a little frustrating - and I would not recommended trying to get them to work for the first time if you are already having system problems.

However, if you can get the dos drivers for a (non-usb) zip drive then follow this link
to an evaluation version of PKZIP - I haven't used this version so my apologies if it doesn't work (but I would expect an evaluation version to give some functionality.

For the zip drive dos drivers try either drivers guide.com or getting in touch with Iomega.

Regards.
