Have DSL, with sprint router connected to linksys router for small network with 1 server. Disabled DHCP, added static nonroutable addresses on each computer 10.4.32 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.224 in order to have more subnets at a later date. I also installed Win 2000 server. I can ping other addresses okay, but I can't ping localhost, I get a "device timed out" error. Why can't I ping localhosts? Can the server and the linksys have static nonroutable addresses? Please help!

'localhost' is usually configured in your 'hosts' file. Maybe that's missing. Instead of "ping localhost", try "ping 127.0.0.1". That should work.

Thanks,

It took awile but I discovered that my problem was Norton Internet Security (NIS) being enabled on the WIn 2K server computer. Once I disabled it, I was able to ping myself and ping other computers on the LAN. I installed it because I wanted a second layer of security, unfortunately, NIS does not tell you what ports it opens or closes when you set its "high" "medium" or "low" settings. Does anyone know of a more granular host firewall?

Zone alarm pro.

You can specify which ports each individual program or component can access, both incoming and outgoing.

I'm not affiliated, just a loyal customer for 2 years.

Good luck...
