Hi,

I am running Sybase ASE 12.0 on Solaris and am experiencing the following error, when attempting to create a database:

_________________________________________

CREATE DATABASE failed because the device 'data' is not online.
_________________________________________

The device exists, has an existing physical location and has other DBs created on it. Any ideas what is wrong and/or how I can bring the device online?

Thanks,

Jonathan Daniels

The only way I know of for a device to be off line isn't something you can generally fix inside Sybase (e.g. the disk has failed; been disconnected somehow; or the Unix partition it was on made unavailable). Is it possible that "data" is not be the actual name of the device (although it contains "data" portions of other DB's)?

Use sp_helpdevice to verify the correct name.

There's also a set of status bits that you'll get back. If the name of the device (in the "device_name" column) is "data", then I'd check the documentation to see what the status bits mean.

If you need to do some queries to see which bits are set, you'll want to do the SELECTs against master..sysdevices.

Best of luck,

John

Thanks. I tried dropping the device, recreating it and, inexplicably, it seemed to work!
