I am having a problem with the device list in Resource Manager Essentials -> Adminstration -> Inventory -> List Devices.

The device list is populated with IP addresses as opposed to DNS entries. We have verified the DNS entries in our DNS server and all the devices that ciscoworks2000 manages in our network has a forward and reverse-lookup entry.

Is there a way to clear the device list entry? If not, is there a way to edit/change the display in the list?

Is the ip addresses you see in the list in the DNS or only your primary IP address for each device?

If you have discovered your network with ANI, then it uses the first IP address it sees for each device. The it tries to find a dns name for that ip address. If you haven't a record in you dns for that ip address CW2000 stop the dns name discovery for that device. To have good names for the devices, put in all the ip addresses for all devices in the dns but only do fwd lookup for the primary ip address. Then ANI will use the correct dns name and the correct ip address.

Hi Charles,
Hope you have already solved your problem. If not, check these recommendations for DNS:
Configuring DNS
ANI uses Domain Name Services (DNS), if available, to perform device name lookups. Different ANI functions, such as physical discovery and path determination, require different information from DNS. Therefore, their requirements for configuring DNS differ also.

Follow these guidelines for configuring DNS:

Make sure all devices have unique host names--required for physical discovery and path determination.

Verify that the workstation running the ANI Server uses DNS--required for physical discovery and path determination.

Include the domain name when configuring DNS on workstation running the ANI Server--required for path determination.

List all devices in DNS--required for path determination.

To determine a path among devices not discovered by the physical discovery process, all devices involved in the path must be listed in DNS.

Configure a single DNS server on the workstation running the ANI Server--required for path determination.

Using multiple DNS servers on this system might cause slowdowns if the primary DNS server is not functioning. In such a case, DNS lookups being serviced by the secondary or tertiary DNS servers would be significantly slower resulting in degraded performance.

ANI attempts lookups on the primary DNS server and any additional backup DNS servers. If ANI does not receive a response from any DNS server, it returns IP addresses only. These additional lookups can degrade performance so if you are experiencing DNS problems, consider disabling this lookup. See Disabling Reverse DNS Lookup for details.

If DNS is not available, ANI uses IP addresses provided that these address can be obtained from physical discovery. If you do not use DNS in your network, consider disabling this DNS lookup. See Disabling Reverse DNS Lookup.
