When I reboot my computer I receive the following message:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the appliction associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

qbikhk98.vxa

The screen then instructs me to hit any key. When I do so, I wait for roughly two minutes and the system brings up my desktop after which all of my software is fully accessable and functional. To the best of my knowledge, I have not deleted any files by mistake, or otherwise, and I don't have a clue what file or associated application the above message may be referring to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I have encountered this problem a few times during my years as a sorry Microsoft software user.

Anyway, check you harddisk for corruption, check for viruses. Also this problem can be caused by a failed installation as well as a failled uninstallation.

On last resort I run "sysedit" from the run menu, and do a search on
qbikhk98.vxa
and remove it and see if you system is stable

I forgot to mention.

I do not know if it is a device, if it is then run
hwinfo /ui
to see if you have any device problems.

This is all assuming you are using Win 98.

Note: I got this tip from another thread.

This one is usually easy to fix with the solution below, but that is a very strange name and it should end with .vxd

backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

and delete the key named qbikhk98.

If that doesn't do it, run a complete virus scan on the entire hard drive.
