I just installed 8.1.7 and the install seemed to go ok. Apache server even started and was working. But when I rebooted Apache disappeared and the shortcut that oracle created will not start it again. But the biggest problem i have is that after the database was up and running, I was able to create some tables, and users, etc. but when I try to install developer 6i I get an error stating "the location specified, c:\oracle\81 is already used as an oracle home for oracle817 production it can not be used as an oracle home for 'nt'"

I am installing both oracle and developer on a win2000 machine that has never had oracle installed before. I cant find any way around the above error. There are no other choices in the developer installer and I cant select any other home, etc. What can I do to get developer installed? Whats going on with my install?

any help would be appreciated..

What version of developer are you installing?

It sounds like an error one would receive when trying to install an 8.0 product on top of an 8.1 product. Unfortunately I don't know if that is possible. The converse is acceptable, just not 8.1 than 8.0, as far as I know.

Also, depending on the version of Developer you have, I have seen some really bad installers. So bad that I will use the installer from another product and point it to the Developer CD so that my machine doesn't get hosed.

Do you have another machine to put developer on?

Good luck,

I tried the combination on two different machines. The version of developer i downloaded at the same time as the oracle 8.1.7, its 6iV2. If that version doesnt work with oracle 8.1.7, what version of developer would be correct to use?

thanks

D2K 6iV2 DOES work with 8.1.7.
Try this:
When the D2K install prompts you for an Oracle Home, it will automatically put up the Oracle Home for your data server. Try overwriting the Oracle Home name (probably something clever like ORACLE_HOME or ORAHOME, or some such) with a new name for your D2K home (Something equally clever, like D2K_HOME). When you do this, the path should either disappear or go from grey to black (I forget which), so you can enter a new path (e.g., D:\D2K_Home - although I think it will be happier with the name DEFAULT_HOME) in which D2K should be installed. I think your installation should go OK after that.
This is one of the more endearing features of Oracle and its own utilities - they are very quarrelsome during installs! It's been more than once I've had to strip everything Oracle off of my machine and start over because of this sort of foolishness!).

Also, since you'll now have multiple homes, it's possible that some things won't seem to work. Often the solution will be to use the Oracle Home Selector to switch the Oracle Home setting for your machine. Things will magically start to work! (Another "feature"!).

Finally, about your Apache Server. I have also seen the shortcuts and Start Menu selections stop working. However, if you go into your Windows Services applet, there should be an Oracle***HTTPServer service. Start it from the Services applet. Sometimes you will get an error saying the service couldn't be started because the server wouldn't respond to the control. After you "OK" this notice off of the screen, you will notice the service is started. Further investigation shows it is indeed started and working just fine.
Why? TJTWIW (That's Just The Way It Works!).

Good luck, and if it's any comfort to you, many of us feel your pain!

thanks, Ill give that a try.... I think I tried writing over the oracle home selection in the popup but it wouldnt let me change it... Ill try again to make sure...
