I signed up for Devcon 2003 because I have never been and my supervisor offered it so what the heck. But really I do expect to gain from the experience and have some fun. For those who have been to past Devcon's what has been the take home/work value? Did you find the conference to provide immediate information that could be put into development? Pros /Cons? I would like to here what other have to say outside of advisor.com's opinions.

I think rgbean can better express the amount of information you can gain from going to a Devcon, since he has been to at least 11 of them (I think), but take it from one that has been to 6 of them, you will not regret it (not will your supervisor). You will surprised at the amount of information they can pack in to those 3-4 days. All I would suggest is get there early if you can, get the scheduled workshop and make yourself a schedule (and follow it), and plan it so you get to see as much as possible. Take notes, you won't remember everything. Don't worry, there is also time to have some fun. Meeting all these VFP programmers from all over the world, gives you a great sense of belonging. Good luck!!

P.S. Who knows you might get a copy of VFP9.0 beta...

I think Mike is referring to my posting in thread184-521823. As you can tell I believe they can be worth it. You need to be willing to put 8 -> 14 per day for 3+ days in the regular sessions and extra sessions, as well as interact with other attendees, speakers and vendors. It's not a place to simply sit back and just "take it in" if you really want answers. If you don't come back exhausted, you've probably missed something! :)

Thanks I appreciate the tips and insight. It is $1400 I plan to squeeze out as much as I can. Also have to consider hotel, air, food, etc. So it better be good.

Or you could jump on a serious plane, and fly to

The Conference would be cheaper in US dollar terms.... but it is a tiny bit further away to fly ... and after some more thought.....

naaaaah... you guys go to Devcon....meet the major North American FoxPro gurus first...

Oh and dont worry about the $1400 US..It is only money. I am sure that you will work bloody hard for it.... the problem is... recovering from the night before the conference.... and still 'firing' at 7am...

Rob,

I agree with what the others have said. I have always found DevCons a great experience. You will learn a lot, but it will be hard work. Get plenty of sleep before you set out, because you won't have time for much after you've arrived.

Hope you have a great time. Sorry I won't be meeting you there myself this year. And don't forget to report back after the event.

Mike
