determining web site statistics

hi,

there are a lot of web site analysis software out there in the net. i would like to be able to create my own. however, where do those analysis softwares get their data?

do they get it "plainly" from the logs generated? or do they have any other sources of information for this statistics?

i would like to implement it on apache and tomcat...

The only web statistics generator that I'm familiar with is Webalizer (

http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/).

Webalizer uses the data from Apache log files to compute statistics, and I would expect others to do so as well.

It is either the logs, which has some configuration options, see the docs. The other way is to embed stuff in your

http://www pages

to send to a log file. Also see the docs for what is available information which you may want to log.
