Determining copy-2 media ID

Beginner question I know but I don't deal with duplicate tapes often.

We're not using vault, just making inline copies. The primary backup tape is off-site. How do I determine what the copy-2 media ID is for a particular file so I can promote that tape to primary? Is it as simple as expiring the primary copy? I don't really want to do that, but what happens to the primary tape when a copy is promoted?
