I'm a new AIX support person. Occationally I get a call from a client complaining that their nightly tar based tape backup is taking too long.

Is there a way to determine the number of blocks that have been written to the tape?

Could you please show me the tar command that you are using? Is there any way that you can redirect the files to the tar and direct the output of the command to a file or maybe set -x to show the progress by tailing -f the file?

Regards,
Khalid
