How do I find out what XFree86 version I have? I have an IBM Thinkpad a31p and I can't get the Xconfigurator to configure my Xserver. Thanks.

What distro of linux, you can use package manager commands.

Under RedHat or Mandrake:

foxtrot(~)$ rpm -q XFree86
XFree86-4.3.0-55

For debian, read the manpage for apt to see how to get version information.

for debian:

dpkg -l xfree86*

which returns:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
