Is there a way to determine if a user is running XP SP2 by looking at a dll? Need to determine without visiting the pc's

Well you could see if there's any Service Pack uninstall/backup folders in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, I'm sure one exists.

Would one show up if they had SP1 installed? How would you differentiate?

create a batchfile with the following:
Run the command "systeminfo" from a command prompt, pipe the outcome to a txt-file, let it copy the txt-file to a networklocation, filter out the info from all the files that you want ....
let the created batchscript run on startup

You can Right-click on "My Computer", then choose "Properties", then look under the 'General Tab" to see what Service Pack is installed.
