I have a ip that I cannot determine what the device is. I've tried a nbtstat -a, shortcut to a open share and looked at my network AV for the ip to be listed as being a Workstation. Other that a ping, I cannot figure out what it is. It is in a ip range that printers use but I thought it would show up as a share via a short cut to the ip but it didn't.

Any other ideas on how to determine if its a workstation, printer, or other network device?

Thanks for any ideas

Not really. There was a similar thread awhile back where they described how you could get the MAC address, and then look it up to see who makes the NIC. Sometimes that can give you a clue, but probably not.

You might try using a port/network scanning tool and running it against the IP address. Those are usually pretty good about returning the type of device at that address, including OS, running services, etc.

If you can get the MAC, any decent switch will then be able to tell you what port that MAC is plugged into, then trace it to the device that way.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Try running a monitoring tool like LanSpy, Superscan among others. You enter the IP address and it will enumerate all services running on the device. From there you can get a general idea of what the device is
