Determina mail server type

Hi

I have just as an assignment to monitor an mailserver
however as i understand the mail server is not st with the commu8nity string as i use her for the rset of equipment
in our network to keep an aye on them.

he tells me i cna telnet in to it on an port and all i get is

at telnet xxx.xxx.xxx. yyy

220 .mail.xxxx.xx ESMTP Postfix

what does it tells me and how can i
enter the machine at port yy and set the snmp communuity and stuff so i get it working and monitopr it ..

I suppose it is microsoft exchange server but nor help or ?
gives me any options to work on just error and code 505 i think it was .

You can't always tell what server it is... you'd normally use HELP or EHLO to determine the type of authentication

What are you trying to monitor?

It says right in the 220 return that it's postfix. That's a relay/gateway.
