Hey Everybody.

I'm trying to determin what type of USB porst I have on my dual G4 Graphite system. Went to the Profiler and it just says USB port.

So I look around on the net and there is nothing I can find to tell me if they are 2.0, 1.0, whatever.whatever. On PC there is the Belkin deal or you cna just go into the bios and figure it out.

IS there software that will do this for me or something I can do in terminal that will return the answers I need.

Thanks

Unless you installed an after market USB card, then they'll be USB1.0. Only the very recent macs have USB 2.0 (Powerbooks, G5s and iMacs).

I got a Belkin 2.0 5 port card and ran into another snag. According to the belkin site, the card works fin in systems with the OS being 10.2.7 or higher. What they failed to mention is that you have to have 10.3 for it to function as a 2.0 port. Otherwise, you have a lovely 5 port 1.1 card that does you no good.

Any ideas as to a solution to this problem aside from what ammounts to a $160, including the card and OS, upgrade so I can run a scanner? lol

I am not sure ANY MacOS prior to 10.3 supports USB 2.0

That's what I'm gathering. Sheesh! You'd think with the foreward thinking of Apple, they would have come up with a patch to make it work in the previous version of the OS. Considering that so many people aren't going to the new one right away. They keep Classic running in top form... lol

You do realize that Apple is not a proponent of USB 2.0, that they favor firewire and tried to use USB 2.0 chipsets without USB 2.0 software to keep Mac users on firewire?

while by the specs they are similar speeds, firewire is actually MUCH faster.

I guess that makes sense. I have seen the trend towards firewire products from Apple. In some ways this is good but in others, I have to question it. I understand the driving of technology by making things have to be changed but Aplle seems to have a tendancy to push the issue, even when they are not a force that has heavy influence on the market as a whole.

For instance, the floppy disk thing was annoying as customers sent everything that way for some time. Or the fact that they have to include an adapter for the standard monitor. Like everybody, after spending a chunk of change on a new system should then want to go out and buy a display that costs more than the system itself.

Bear in mind that I love my Macs and have completly converted from the PC world, save for my one lowly eMachine that I use when I need something PC-ish. lol

Ah well, I guess it's off to 10.3 land for me. Any place I can get a 5 system liscense for a reasonable ammount or is it better to go with one upgrade for each?

APlle sells a 5 unit Family pack for $200
