this might seem dumb, but lets say i have a range A1:A10, but only some of the cells in that range are used such as B1=A1+A5+A9 becuase only those cells have values in them, lets say a new value has been added to A7, is there anyway of automotically adding A7 to the formula, i'm guessing not, but hey you never know?

Just use =SUM(A1:A10)
if there is no value, it will evaluate to 0 and therefore not affect the total Rgds

hmm well what if i dont want to use a specific range of cells, lets say i want to use my range from cell A1 to the cell in column A with the value of TOTAL in it. Becuase lets say i want to insert new cells or rows in between A1 and whatever cell in column A that has TOTAL in it. How would i specify that range automatically everytime i insert a new cell. basically i dont want to keep updating the formula every time i add a new row with a value to be added to the formula. I hope im clear, probably not. can anyone help?? thanks!

The SUM() formula will update automatically when new rows are inserted. Give it a try and see how it works for you.
