Is there a way for me to tell if a trace is being run on a sql server?

If it's sql 2005 by default it is always running a trace. Check the log folder of your install directory.

- If at first you don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.
 
If SQL 2005 you can view the running traces using the sys.traces DMV.
