Why does Win98 not detect the modem already installed?

The HD has been formatted, and WIN98 has been installed fresh.

When I try to connect to the internet, the system does not detect the modem already there.

Please...if this is a quick fix...let me know the details...if not...tell me how it may be fixed, or an appropriate link to how it can be fixed.

This can't be that complicated...is it??

The modem in question is an Intel internal v.92 v.90 pci data/fax/speakerphone modem

I have tried Cheyenne Bitware installation disk, with no luck...thanks in advance

Does it appear in device manager, either under modems, or maybe listed as pci communications device?

If no, remove modem, and reseat it.
If windows still shows nothing, try a different pci slot, and if still no go, it may be dead.

If yes, give specifics, any exclamation marks or red flags in device manager, what exactly is listed under modems, etc... Also in this case, go start>settings>control panel>modems, make sure only one is listed, if 2, remove them both and reload the driver using that disk. Once 1 is listed, go to properties, diagnostics tab, select the com port the modem is on, hit more info. What appears?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I am having the same problem, after re-formatting the hard drive and partitioning it, the modem that was there before, a Rockwell 97 RLDL56dpf is not being detected. When I rebooted, it is selecting a BOCA modem from the compatible list, but will not accept the drives. What can I do? I also have a Cheyene Bitware disk that show 56k/v.90, which locks up upon trying to install. Error msg, that I am getting is the same thing "Modem cannot be detected. Make sure that it is turned on" I do not see any turn on switches or jumpers. What can I do? Thanks in advance!!!

Some require the software to be installed before the modem is installed. And when things go horribly wrong you need to remove everything and start over fresh. Not only the physical device but the links to it in the device manager and sometimes in the registry.

I checked out some of the stuff you were asking about, and found it curious that when I went to diagnostics of the com port, under 'more info' I got:

Port Com 2
Interrupt..3
Address..2F8
UART..NS1655OAN
Highest speed..
Identifier..USRK2-Gen

Now, on Port Com 1, that last line of text did not appear...it only said 'Modem not found'

Does this possibly mean there could be a USRobotics modem located on that port or am I wrong?

And why is it always such a pain to detect a modem, which doesn't seem to be the case with WinXP anymore...have they addressed that problem?

P.S. Also, In the Device Manager...There is an entry with a yellow question mark, followed by 'Other Devices'

When you open it the sub headings are:

...All starting with a yellow qestion mark and exclamation mark...

You have a modem on COM2.

Your other devices are the PCI modem, a sound card, and an ethernet controller, all without the proper drivers loaded. You may, or may not, be able to load the correct drivers by highlighting the device with an error, then getting to the update driver screen.

Does this motherboard have an "AC97" modem built in? Check in bios and find the references to "AC97" modem and "AC97" sound, and turn the modem off if you are going to use a PCI modem.

The other devices error issues kind of remind me of Syntax or PCChips M/Bs where the drivers haven't been installed yet or were only partially installed.
