Detect Version Number of Program

Is there a way to detect the version number of another executable through your vb app.

I am trying to have my app automatically prompt the user to install a new version if there is one available and if I could detect the version of the exe in the setup folder on the network and compare it against the current apps version I think I could do it this way.

If any one has done something simialar in a different way please let me know.

I know its possible a developer here incorporated it into his latest app. However he has taken a new job and taken the knowledge with him.
