detect USB HID

I have a small device (USB PC LOCK) that is essentially a USB HID. It's driver is unsatisfactory, and I wish to create my own. I have been searching for some sample code that detects when a new USB HID device shows up. I can find lots of .Net code, but nothing yet for VB6. Also, I've found some commercial libraries, but I want to first try and do it myself.
Any suggestions are welcome. -thanks
