detect the onsubmit of a web form

Anyone know how to monitor a web form for the submit button to be hit? I am creating a web tool bar object and need to know when the user has hit the submit button of a specific form so I can get the details from the form to store locally. There is an onsubmit event but I can't work out how it works.
